Choose a writing method

You can write self, peer, upward, and manager reviews with the same methods. Start with the method that helps you explain the work. You can change methods as you write. AutoDraft and quick edits are on the Windmill review page. Self, peer, and upward review chats are also available in Slack. Manager review chat is in Windmill.

Open your assignment

Open Performance reviews, select the cycle, and open To do. Select the review you want to write.
  • Self review: Write about your own work.
  • Peer review: Write about the person named in the approved request. Read the focus note above the questions, if present.
  • Upward review: Write about the person named in the assignment. A later org chart change does not change this assignment.
  • Manager review: Write about the employee assigned to you. You do not need to be their current org chart manager.
Each assignment has its own questions and answers. Check the person’s name before you start.

Refer to the context report while you write

You can refer to the Context report in the side panel while you write your answers. The report brings together information from the review period. Use it to find examples of the work and results. Self reviews can include your work, goals, feedback, and 1:1s. Peer and upward reviews use shared work and records you can access about the person. Manager reviews can also use submitted self, peer, and upward feedback. You can also refer to tabs such as 1:1s when they appear. Read Windy and review context for the tabs and information you can use with each review type.

Check and submit your answers

Check each answer for accuracy. Complete every required question and keep text answers within the word limits. Then submit the review. Windy submits only after you give explicit approval. Windmill saves changes as drafts. Changes to a submitted review take effect when you submit again. A completed cycle is read-only. A manager-review lock or removal of your assignment can also prevent changes. See Drafts, submissions, and missed deadlines and Review data access.

Know who can read your review

Your writing method does not change who can read the submitted review.
  • Self review: You can read your own answers. Cycle admins, assigned manager reviewers, the saved cycle management hierarchy, and calibration committees with access can read submitted answers.
  • Peer and upward feedback: Feedback includes your name. The person you review cannot read the answers. You can reopen feedback you wrote. Cycle admins and managers with access can read it.
  • Manager review: Cycle admins can read submitted answers. The employee can read answers intended for them after the review packet is shared.
Peer packet access uses the saved cycle management hierarchy. Upward feedback access can also use the current reporting line or delegated access. See Review data and context access for the detailed access rules.
