Configure a question

All review stages support the same question types. Each question has these basic settings:
  • Title: The question that the reviewer answers.
  • Description: Optional instructions that appear with the question.
  • Help text: Optional plain text that appears in an information tooltip.
  • Required: Choose whether the reviewer must answer the question before they submit the review.
  • Answer settings: Configure the choices, limits, labels, or writing guidance for the question type.
Titles and descriptions support Markdown. Conditional questions are not available, so one answer cannot show or hide another question.

Choose a question type

  • Text: The reviewer writes an answer. You can set a maximum word count and tell Windy how to format a draft.
  • Single Select: The reviewer selects one answer from a list. You can ask for a written follow-up.
  • Multi-Select: The reviewer selects one or more answers. You can set the minimum and maximum number of choices.
  • Yes/No: The reviewer selects yes or no. You can ask for a written follow-up.
  • Scale: The reviewer selects a whole number from a range. Set the minimum and maximum values and an optional label for each end of the scale.
  • eNPS: The reviewer selects a number from zero to 10. This range cannot change.
  • Rating: The reviewer selects one of at least two numbered rating points. Give each point a label. Select Show option descriptions to add a description to each point. You can ask for a written explanation.

Control what employees can see

Manager-review questions have a Visible to employee setting. When it is on, the employee can see the question and answer after the manager shares the review. When it is off, the question and answer stay private to managers and HR. Other review types do not have this setting. If different groups need different questions, create separate stages of the same review type and assign each person to the correct stage.

Use answers in results and calibration

Review packets show submitted answers. For Rating questions, the packet shows both the selected number and its label. Insights can show averages and answer distributions for Rating, Scale, and other numeric questions. During calibration, facilitators can change supported Single Select, Yes/No, Rating, eNPS, and small whole-number Scale answers.

Change questions after work starts

  • Before work starts: Cycle admins can add, remove, copy, reorder, or change questions. For peer feedback, this stays possible during peer nominations and stops when peer feedback starts.
  • After work starts: Cycle admins can change wording, descriptions, help text, answer labels, Text word limits, and question order.
  • Settings that become locked: Cycle admins cannot add or remove questions, change a question type or its answer choices, or change an optional question to required. They can change a required question to optional.
  • After the cycle ends: Questions cannot change after the cycle is completed or archived.
