Write a document in Windmill, upload a file you already have, or link one from Google Drive or Notion.

Creating a document

1

Open the library

2

Start a document

Click Add knowledge, then Create document.
3

Describe it

Enter a Title and a When to use this note, and choose the Location. Then click Create document.
4

Write the content

The document opens in the editor. Write the body in Content.

Uploading files

Click Add knowledge, then Upload document, or drag files onto the library. Windmill converts each file into a knowledge document. You can upload Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, CSV, Markdown, and text files.

Linking Google Drive and Notion documents

Link a document to keep it in Google Drive or Notion instead of copying it. Windy always uses the latest version. Click Add knowledge, then Link a document. See Linked documents.
A linked document gets the access of the Windmill folder it’s in, not its sharing in Google Drive or Notion. Anyone who can see the folder can read it, even if they can’t open the original. See Who can see a linked document.

The document editor

Open any document to edit it. The editor has:
  • Breadcrumbs that show the document’s folder
  • The Title
  • The When to use note
  • The Content, which several people can edit at once
Changes save automatically, and an indicator shows when they’re saved.

FAQs

Upload it. See Uploading files. You can also attach the file in Slack or Ask Windy and ask Windy to add it:
@Windy, add this file to Company Knowledge.
Organize it by level. Spreadsheets and pasted tables usually lose the structure Windy needs to compare expectations across levels.A structure that works well:
  • A heading for the framework, like Engineering Competency Framework
  • A section for each level, like L1 - Associate through L10 - Fellow
  • Under each level, the expectations for each competency, like Technical Skills or Communication
Tips:
  • If the framework is a spreadsheet, upload it, then reorganize it by level.
  • Write expectations that are specific and observable, so Windy can use them in review follow-ups and suggestions.
  • To use levels as explicit criteria in a cycle, reference the framework in your review questions.
