Prompt templates let you save prompts you use often and reuse them in any conversation with Windy. Instead of retyping the same instructions every time, you can select a saved template and Windy will use it as context for your message. Windmill also has a library of global templates ready for you to use for common workflows like writing review feedback, preparing for 1:1s, or summarizing team updates. You can browse and select prompt templates from three places in the chat:
  • Slash icon — Click the slash icon in the chat input bar to open the full gallery
  • Browse prompts — Click Browse prompts in the recent prompts section at the top of a chat
  • Type ”/” — Type / in the chat input to open a quick-access dropdown with your recent and searched prompts. Select Browse prompts at the bottom to open the full gallery
When you select a prompt, it appears as a reference chip in your chat input. Send your message and Windy will use that prompt as context for the conversation. The prompt gallery shows all available templates in a card layout. Each card displays the prompt name and description. The prompt gallery showing template cards with search and tag filters

Search and filter

Use the search bar at the top of the gallery to find prompts by name or content. If your admin has organized prompts with tags, use the tag filters in the left sidebar to narrow results.

Recent prompts

Your most recently used prompts appear below the message input, so your go-to templates are always one click away.

Creating a prompt template

1

Go to Settings > Prompts > My prompts

Navigate to Settings > Prompts in the Windmill Dashboard.
2

Click Create prompt

Click the Create prompt button to open the prompt editor.
3

4

Save your prompt

Click Save to add the template to your personal library. It’ll be available in the gallery right away.
You can also create prompts directly from the gallery by clicking Create new prompt without leaving your conversation.

Using global prompts

Global prompts are templates managed by Windmill and available to everyone. You’ll find them under the Global tab in Settings > Prompts or alongside your personal prompts in the gallery. Global prompts are read-only, but you can fork any global prompt into your personal library to customize it for your needs.

Forking a global prompt

1

Open a global prompt

Find a global prompt in the gallery or the Global tab and click to open it.
2

Edit and save

Make any changes you’d like to the name or body, then save. This creates a personal copy in your library—the original global prompt stays unchanged.

Managing your prompts

Editing a prompt

Open Settings > Prompts > My prompts, click on a prompt, and make your changes. Your edits are saved immediately.

Archiving a prompt

If you no longer need a prompt, open the dropdown menu on the prompt row and select Archive. Archived prompts won’t appear in the gallery but can be restored later.

Restoring an archived prompt

In the My prompts tab, filter by Archived status to view archived prompts. Open the dropdown menu on the prompt you’d like to restore and select Unarchive.
