Connecting Jira to Windmill

The Jira integration with Windmill allows you to connect your Jira account to Windmill, enabling a seamless synchronization of project activities and accomplishments. Once connected, Windmill can automatically associate Jira activities with your Windmill timeline, providing a more complete picture of your work.

This integration helps with mapping user activities, syncing work logs, and tracking issue-based accomplishments directly within Windmill.

What Windmill Gets Access To

When you connect your Jira account to Windmill, we request the following OAuth scopes from Atlassian:

  • "read:me" – To identify the authorized user.

  • "manage:jira-webhook" – To fetch, register, refresh, and delete dynamically declared Jira webhooks.

  • "read:account" – To access information about your Atlassian account.

  • "offline_access" – To maintain a long-term connection and refresh tokens.

  • "read:jira-work" – To access Jira issues, attachments, worklogs, and related data.

  • "read:jira-user" – To view user information like usernames, email addresses, and avatars.

  • "read:workflow:jira" – To view workflows associated with issues.

These scopes allow Windmill to:

  • Fetch, register, refresh, and delete Jira webhooks

  • View user information (names, emails, avatars)

  • Read project and issue data

  • Search for issues and related objects (attachments, worklogs)

  • View workflows

Note: All of these capabilities are read-only or webhook management, ensuring Windmill only accesses what's needed to map and sync activities.

Can I Limit What Windmill Sees in Jira?

Currently, Jira does not allow you to configure custom subsets of visible projects when authorizing third-party apps. Windmill receives access to the same data your authorized Jira account has access to. Windmill does not gain access to Jira projects or data outside of what the connected user account can already see.

Managing Visibility in Windmill

Windmill ensures transparency and privacy. In the Windmill dashboard:

  • Go to the Connections tab.

  • Select your Jira connection.

  • Map which Jira accomplishments should appear in Windmill.

  • If Windmill can’t access certain entities (e.g. a project you don’t have permission for), this will be clearly indicated in the UI.

Troubleshooting Sync Issues

If you're not seeing activities from Jira show up in Windmill:

  • Check the Connections tab in your dashboard.

  • Ensure the account used has proper access to the relevant Jira projects.

  • Re-authorize the integration if needed.

To get started, head over to the Connections tab in Windmill and authorize Jira.
