# Gusto

> Connect Gusto to Windmill to sync employees, managers, departments, and employment data so your org chart and access controls stay accurate automatically.

## Benefits of connecting Gusto to Windmill

Connecting Gusto to Windmill keeps your employee roster and reporting structure accurate without manual updates. When Gusto is the source of truth, Windmill automatically:

* Imports new hires as soon as they are onboarded
* Updates manager → direct report relationships
* Reflects promotions, title changes, and department moves
* Archives employees when they leave the company

This ensures performance reviews, 1:1s, and feedback always reflect the **current team**, without HR needing to update two systems.

## Connected data

Windmill syncs the following fields from Gusto:

| Employee Name                           | Full legal name as stored in Gusto                  |
| Work Email                              | Used as the identity + login field                  |
| Job Title                               | Displays across Windmill profiles and review cycles |
| Manager Relationship                    | Drives org charts, 1:1s, and review assignment      |
| Department / Team                       | Used to group employees for reviews and reporting   |
| Employment Status (Active / Terminated) | Used to automatically archive employees             |
| Start Date                              | Supports new-hire ramp reviews and onboarding flows |
| Gender                                  | Synced if provided by Gusto                         |

**Windmill does not sync salary, compensation, payroll, benefits, home address, Social Security Numbers, dates of birth, phone numbers, pronouns, or employment contracts.** See [Personally Identifiable Information](/security/pii) for the canonical list of fields Windmill collects.

## Permissions

The user enabling the integration must have:

* **Admin** permissions in Gusto
* Ability to access **People → Team** directory data

The integration uses Gusto’s secure OAuth connection.\
No passwords or payroll permissions are shared.

**Windmill has read-only access. It does not write back to Gusto.**

## Managing employee + manager updates

If you need to:

* Change a manager
* Update someone’s department or title
* Archive a terminated employee

> **Make the change in Gusto.**

Gusto is the **source of truth** for employee records.\
Any updates made **directly in Windmill** will be overwritten on the next sync.
