# Bonusly

> Connect Bonusly to Windmill so public peer recognition appears as feedback, with the people who gave and received it matched to their employee profiles.

## Benefits of connecting Bonusly to Windmill

Connecting Bonusly to Windmill brings the recognition your team already gives each other into Windmill. Managers see the praise that colleagues give, without a separate tool or a manual copy.

* Public Bonusly recognition appears as feedback in Windmill, labeled **Recognition**
* Each person who receives a bonus gets their own entry, linked to their profile
* Add-ons to a bonus show with the original bonus
* Everyone can see peer recognition in one place, next to other feedback
* Recent edits and deletions in Bonusly carry over, so Windmill stays accurate

> [!NOTE]
>
> Bonusly is in beta. The integration is read-only and imports recognition only. Windmill turns on the recognition views for each company as the beta rolls out. If you connect Bonusly and cannot find the recognition, contact Windmill support.

## How to connect Bonusly

You must be an Admin, HR Admin, or Integration Manager to connect Bonusly. A company has one Bonusly connection.

**1. Create an API token in Bonusly**

In Bonusly, create an API token for Windmill. Give the token only the `recognition:read` scope. Windmill needs no other access.

**2. Open the Connect Bonusly page in Windmill**

In Windmill, open the [Connect Bonusly page](https://app.gowindmill.com/COMPANY/config/integrations/sources/bonusly/connect). Bonusly is in beta, so it may not appear in the list on [Settings > Integrations](https://app.gowindmill.com/COMPANY/config/integrations) yet.

**3. Paste your API token and connect**

Paste the token into the **Enter your Bonusly API token** field and click **Connect**. Windmill checks the token with Bonusly before it saves the connection.

If Windmill cannot validate the token, it shows the message "Bonusly could not validate this API token. Check the token and try again." Check that you copied the full token and that the token is still active in Bonusly.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Connecting Bonusly does not import past recognition. Windmill reads new bonuses and recent changes only. Bonuses that people gave more than a day or so before you connected do not appear.

## Connected data

When Bonusly is connected, Windmill securely reads the following information:

| Data Type | How Windmill Uses It |
| - | - |
| Public bonuses (message and date) | Shown as feedback labeled **Recognition** |
| Add-ons to a bonus | Shown with the original bonus |
| Giver and recipients (name and email address) | Matched to Windmill employees so the feedback links to the correct profiles |
| Company name | Identifies the connected Bonusly account |

Windmill does not import Bonusly points, rewards, or balances. Windmill removes the points that Bonusly adds to the start or end of a message, such as `+10`, so only the message remains.

## How recognition appears in Windmill

Windmill creates one feedback entry for each person who receives a bonus. If one bonus recognizes three people, each person gets an entry. The entries are grouped, so the bonus shows as one message with all of its recipients.

* **Audience:** Public. Anyone in your company can see Bonusly recognition.
* **Label:** Recognition.
* **Source:** The feedback shows **on Bonusly** next to the author's name.
* **Private bonuses:** Windmill does not import private bonuses.
* **Add-ons:** An add-on shows as a reply to the original bonus.
* **Editing:** Nobody can edit or delete this feedback in Windmill. Bonusly owns the text. Make changes in Bonusly.

To find the recognition, open [**Feedback**](https://app.gowindmill.com/COMPANY/feedback). The recognition appears in **Team feed**. In the **Shoutouts** tab, use the **Source** filter and select **Bonusly** to show only Bonusly recognition. See [Shoutouts](https://help.gowindmill.com/features/shoutouts.md) and [Find and manage feedback](https://help.gowindmill.com/features/feedback/find-and-manage-feedback.md).

## Employee matching

Windmill matches each Bonusly person to a Windmill employee by email address. The email address in Bonusly must match the email address on the employee profile.

* Windmill imports a bonus only when the giver matches an employee. This keeps automated Bonusly posts out of Windmill, such as birthday and anniversary celebrations and awards.
* Windmill creates an entry for a recipient only when the recipient matches an employee. Recipients that do not match are skipped.
* If a person does not match, check their email address in Bonusly and in Windmill. Admins can also review the matches in [Settings > Integration Mappings](https://app.gowindmill.com/COMPANY/config/mappings).

## Sync schedule

Windmill syncs Bonusly automatically. You do not need to refresh the data.

| Sync | What it reads | Why |
| - | - | - |
| Hourly | Bonuses from the last day | Shows new recognition and covers Bonusly's 24-hour window for edits |
| Daily | Bonuses from the last 14 days | Finds add-ons on older bonuses and removes bonuses that were deleted |

When someone deletes a bonus, an add-on, or a recipient in Bonusly, Windmill archives the matching feedback on a later sync. Windmill checks only the last 14 days, so a deletion of an older bonus does not carry over. For more information about sync timing, see [Data Sync and Freshness](https://help.gowindmill.com/data/data-sync-and-freshness.md).

## Permissions

Windmill requests **read-only** access through Bonusly's API.

| Permission | Purpose |
| - | - |
| `recognition:read` scope | To read public bonuses, add-ons, and the people on them |
| **No write access** | Windmill never gives, edits, or deletes bonuses in Bonusly |
| **One-way sync** | Data flows from Bonusly to Windmill only |

## FAQs

> **Does Windmill change anything in Bonusly?**
>
> No. The integration is read-only. Windmill never gives, edits, or deletes bonuses, and it does not change points or rewards.

> **Which scope does the Bonusly API token need?**
>
> Only `recognition:read`. Windmill does not need any other scope. Use a token with only this scope to follow the principle of least access.

> **Why is the Bonusly recognition missing from Windmill?**
>
> Check these common causes:
>
> * The bonus is older than the last sync window. Connecting Bonusly does not import past recognition.
> * The hourly sync has not run yet. New bonuses can take up to an hour to appear.
> * The giver or the recipient does not match a Windmill employee. Windmill matches people by email address.
> * Windmill has not turned on the recognition views for your company yet. Contact Windmill support.
> * The bonus is an automated post, such as a celebration or an award. Windmill does not import these.

> **Can I import past Bonusly recognition?**
>
> Not by yourself. Connecting Bonusly starts the import from new activity, and past recognition does not appear automatically. Contact Windmill support if you need earlier recognition imported.

> **Does Windmill import Bonusly points or rewards?**
>
> No. Windmill imports the message of each bonus and the people on it. It removes the points amount, such as `+10`, from the message.

> **Who can see Bonusly recognition in Windmill?**
>
> Everyone in your company. Bonusly recognition is public, and Windmill keeps it public.

> **Can I edit or delete Bonusly recognition in Windmill?**
>
> No. Make changes in Bonusly. Windmill updates the feedback on a later sync. If you delete a bonus in Bonusly, Windmill archives the matching feedback. This works only for bonuses from the last 14 days. A change to an older bonus does not carry over.

> **Can I connect Bonusly more than once?**
>
> No. A company has one Bonusly connection. It is a company integration. Personal connections are not available.

> **Why does one bonus show as several feedback entries?**
>
> Windmill creates one entry for each person who receives a bonus, so each person sees it on their own profile. The entries are grouped, so the bonus still shows as one message.
