# Questions and question types

> Add pulse questions, choose a question type, and set answer choices and required questions.

Each pulse has a list of questions. You choose a type for each question. The type controls how people answer and how Windmill shows the results in [Insights](/features/pulse-surveys/insights).

## Question types

Select the **Add question** button, then select a type.

| Type | How people answer | Settings |
| - | - | - |
| **Text** | Write a free-text answer. | Optional maximum number of words. Select **Add max word count** to set it. |
| **Single Select** | Choose one option. | At least 2 options. Optional option descriptions with **Show option descriptions**. Optional text follow-up with **Allow explanation**. |
| **Multi-Select** | Choose one or more options. | At least 2 options. |
| **Yes/No** | Choose **Yes** or **No**. | No answer is selected in advance. Under **Require explanation**, turn on **After Yes** or **After No** to ask for a text follow-up. |
| **Scale** | Choose a number in a range. | The default range is 1 to 5, in whole numbers. Set the low and high values and a label for each end. The range can span up to 99. |
| **eNPS** | Choose a number from 0 to 10. | The scale and end labels are fixed: **Not at all likely** and **Extremely likely**. |
| **Rating** | Choose one labeled point. | At least 2 points. The default is 5 points. Each point needs a label. Optional text follow-up with **Allow explanation**. |

eNPS (employee Net Promoter Score) results group answers as detractors (0 to 6), passives (7 to 8), and promoters (9 to 10).

## Question fields

Each question has these fields:

* **Question:** The question label. It can have up to 150 characters. Every question needs a label.
* **Description:** Optional detail about the question, up to 500 characters. Select **Add description** to add it.
* **Help text:** Optional text that respondents see when they hover over the info icon, up to 300 characters. Select **Add help text** to add it.
* **Answer choices:** Single Select and Multi-Select option labels can have up to 100 characters.
* **Required:** Turn this on if people must answer the question before they submit. It is off by default.

When people respond in a chat with Windy, Windy submits the response after they answer all required questions. See [Respond to a pulse](/features/pulse-surveys/respond-to-a-pulse).

## Organize questions

* **Reorder:** Select **Reorder** to move questions up or down. Select **Exit reorder mode** when you finish.
* **Duplicate:** Select **Duplicate question** on a question card to copy it.
* **Delete:** Select **Delete question** on a question card to remove it.
* **Change type:** Select the type label on a question card and select a different type.

Select **Preview** to see the survey as respondents will see it.

## Edit questions later

After you create the pulse, open its **Questions** tab and select **Edit**. Select **Save changes** when you finish. After launch, your changes apply to the next run. See [Edit a live pulse](/features/pulse-surveys/edit-a-live-pulse).

### Legacy pulses

Pulses created before question types were available show a **Legacy pulse** message on the **Questions** tab. These pulses use topics instead of questions. Select **Edit** to create a question set from the topics. When you save, the pulse uses the new questions.
