# Share review results

> Choose a sharing model and share review results.

## Choose a sharing model

Choose the sharing model when you create the cycle, on the manager review stage. You cannot change it after you create the cycle.

| | HR enables sharing (default) | Managers share directly |
| - | - | - |
| **When managers can share** | After a cycle admin enables sharing for their reviews | As soon as they submit their reviews |
| **Who controls timing** | Cycle admins | Each manager |
| **Cycle admins can also share** | ✓ | ✓ |
| **Use it when** | You plan to calibrate, or you want all employees to get results at the same time | You do not plan to calibrate |

<Tip>
  Use **HR enables sharing** if you plan to calibrate. With **Managers share directly**, a manager can share a review before calibration changes are final. The employee then sees ratings that can change later.
</Tip>

## Share a submitted review

<Steps>
  <Step title="Submit the manager review">
    The assigned manager submits the review. This creates the employee's packet.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enable manager sharing">
    With **HR enables sharing**, a cycle admin selects submitted reviews in **Configure cycle > Sharing** and chooses **Enable manager sharing**. With **Managers share directly**, this happens automatically after submission.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Share with the employee">
    The assigned manager opens the packet from **Review packets to share** on the cycle's **To Do** page and selects **Share with employee**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

A cycle admin can share a pending or enabled packet directly from **Configure cycle > Sharing**, including when the assigned manager is unavailable.

Windmill sends the employee a Slack notification with a **View Review** link when the packet is shared. Enabling manager sharing does not send a notification or give the employee access.

## Check the packet before sharing

Cycle admins can inspect packets at any sharing status. The assigned manager and managers above the employee can inspect them after manager sharing is enabled.

Use **Preview as employee** to check the questions and PDF the employee will receive. Review comments can record changes that are needed. Unresolved comments trigger a warning but do not block sharing.

Only the assigned direct manager can share an enabled packet. Managers above that manager can read it but cannot share it.

## Lock the review when ready

Locking is optional when enabling or completing sharing. The sharing dialogs include **Also lock reviews to prevent further edits (recommended)**. When this option is selected, the button changes to **Enable manager sharing & lock** or **Share & Lock**.

Sharing and locking are separate. A lock alone does not give the employee access.

## Share only submitted manager reviews

A manager review must be submitted before it has a packet to share. This workflow cannot share self, peer, or upward reviews on their own.

The employee's packet contains manager questions marked visible to employees. Optional questions can appear without answers.

## Finish calibration before sharing

Calibration submission does not share results with employees. Applied changes become effective immediately. Recommended changes become effective only after the assigned manager accepts them.

Complete those actions before sharing final results. Windmill notifies affected managers about applied changes or shared recommendations. It does not send cycle admins a separate notification that packets are ready.

## Check what each recipient can see

Employees see only manager-review questions marked visible to employees. Their packet does not include self, peer, or upward reviews, calibration comments, review comments, or sharing history.

After any packet is shared, a cycle admin cannot change manager-question visibility for that cycle.

Cycle admins can see all packet questions at any sharing status. The assigned manager and managers above the employee can see them after manager sharing is enabled.
