# Charts and text summaries

> Choose a chart, inspect its answers, compare a target curve, and generate text summaries.

Insights shows a result card for each question. The question type and available answers determine which charts and controls appear.

## Read results by question type

| Question type | Results |
| - | - |
| Text | Response count and an AI summary of common themes when enough answers are available. |
| Single Select | Counts for each answer choice. Choices with numeric rating values use a rating chart. |
| Multi-Select | Counts for each choice and the number of respondents. One person can select several choices, so choice totals can exceed the respondent count. |
| Yes/No | Counts for each answer. |
| Rating | Counts for each rating and the average rating. |
| Scale | A distribution of values and an average. |
| NPS | Counts for each score, promoter/passive/detractor groups, and the Net Promoter Score (NPS). |
| Numeric | Summary statistics and a histogram when a distribution is available. |

## Choose a chart view

Use the chart controls on a question card. Available views depend on the question:

* **Bar list:** Compare counts beside each answer label.
* **Distribution bar:** Compare the proportion of answers in each category.
* **Column chart:** Compare counts across rating values or answer groups.
* **Graph:** Examine the shape of a numeric or rating distribution.

Changing the chart changes the display. It does not change answers or ratings.

## Inspect the answers

Select an available chart group or response total to open its answer details. For text questions, select the response count to read the original answers.

The details remain within your review access and the selected stage and filters. Some numeric cards show statistics without a histogram. Those cards do not have individual-answer details.

Use the original answers to check a chart or summary before you make a review decision.

## Compare a target distribution

For supported **Column chart** and **Graph** views, use the target distribution control. Choose **Even**, **Bell**, **Top heavy**, or **Custom**, or turn the target off.

A target curve is a visual reference. It does not change answers, assign ratings, or apply calibration changes. The target preference is saved in your browser.

## Generate text summaries

<Steps>
  <Step title="Choose the stage and filters">
    In cycle or stage Insights, select the population you want to analyze. Inside a manager review, select **Peer reviews** or **Upward reviews**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Generate the summary">
    Select **Generate summary** on a text question. Cycle and stage Insights also offer **Generate all** when questions have no summary.

    Inside a manager review, the first generation action starts summaries for all text questions in the selected feedback source.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check the source answers">
    Read the summary, then select the response count to check the answers. Use **Refresh summary** when the page reports that responses have changed.
  </Step>
</Steps>

### Minimum response counts

Peer and upward text summaries need at least three different reviewers. Self and manager text summaries need answers about at least two different reviewees.

The counts apply to the selected question, stage, and filters. A smaller filtered group can have charts but too few answers for a text summary.

### Changed or unavailable summaries

A summary can become out of date when submitted answers change. Refresh it to include the current answers. The existing summary can remain visible while the refresh runs.

If generation fails, use the retry action. If the page reports too few responses, wait for more submissions or broaden the cycle filters within your access.
