# Fine-tune a review

> Improve existing answers with manual edits, quick edits, and Windy chat.

## Choose how to change an answer

You can refine an answer that you wrote manually or prepared with AutoDraft or Windy. Use the form for direct changes. Use quick edits for a text change that you want to approve first. Use Windy chat to discuss facts, examples, or several answers.

Check that the final answer gives your assessment of the work.

## Use quick edits

Quick edits suggest changes to an existing text answer on the Windmill review page. You can change the complete answer or select part of the text.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Choose the text">
    Open the answer you want to change. Select text to change only that part, or leave the text unselected to change the complete answer.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose a quick edit">
    Select **Quick edit** or **Quick edit selection**. Choose a command from the menu, or select **Custom instructions** and describe the change.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check the suggestion">
    Read **Suggested edit** and compare it with the original text. Select **Approve** to save the change or **Reject** to keep the original.
  </Step>
</Steps>

The menu includes these options:

* **More positive:** Adjust the tone to be more positive.
* **More direct:** Make the feedback more direct.
* **Fix spelling and grammar:** Correct language errors.
* **Clean up writing:** Improve the wording.
* **Remove AI slop:** Remove generic AI-style wording.
* **Custom instructions:** Specify your own change, then select **Apply instructions**.

Add an answer before you use quick edits. A quick edit can change up to 50,000 characters. Check the review's word limit after you approve a change.

## Make direct changes or use chat

Edit the answer field to make a direct correction. Windmill saves the change as a draft.

Use [Windy chat](/features/performance-reviews/windy-chat) when the change needs discussion. State which answer to change, what to add or remove, and which facts to keep.

## Restore or reset answers

Select **View answer history** above an answer to inspect or restore an earlier version.

Select **Review actions** at the top of the review page for these options:

* **Restart Review:** Clears your saved answers and returns you to the start screen. Earlier answers stay in answer history.
* **Reset:** Generates new context and keeps your answers. Select what to generate again: **Context report**, **Observations**, or **Resend Chat**. New context can take up to 30 minutes.

Use [AutoDraft](/features/performance-reviews/autodraft) if you want a new draft. AutoDraft warns before replacing existing answer text.

## Update the submitted review

After you change a submitted review, select **Resubmit review**. Draft changes do not update the submitted answers until then. Windmill asks for confirmation if a manager review is already shared.

A manager-review lock prevents edits. Cycle completion makes all reviews read-only. A revoked peer request or removal of an assignment can also prevent changes.
