# Use calibration views

> Choose People, Grid, Table, or Insights to review packets, compare ratings, manage the roster, and track the calibration's effect.

Every calibration includes **People**, **Table**, and **Insights** for different parts of the process. **Grid** appears when the calibration has at least two eligible current-question, stat, or supplemental-data axes. Participants can move between available views without losing comments or proposed changes.

| View         | Best for                                                    |
| ------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------- |
| **People**   | Reviewing one person's complete packet                      |
| **Grid** | Comparing the group across two eligible axes |
| **Table** | Scanning, sorting, and filtering a compact roster |
| **Insights** | Reviewing rating changes and before-and-after distributions |

<Note>
  Calibrations are designed for a desktop-sized browser window. On a phone or a browser window that is too small, Windmill asks you to switch to a larger screen.
</Note>

## People view

Use **People** to review one employee's complete packet at a time. The reviewee list stays on the left, and the selected packet appears beside it.

Depending on the cycle, a packet can include **Manager**, **Self**, **Peer**, **Upward**, and **Supplemental Data** tabs. Proposed changes and comments apply to visible manager-review questions; the other tabs provide supporting context.

People view is best for:

* Reviewing the evidence behind a rating
* Moving through the roster packet by packet
* Commenting on a specific question or passage
* Changing a supported structured answer as a facilitator
* Preparing for a detailed discussion about one person

Open comments appear with the relevant reviewee so participants can quickly find unresolved discussions.

**Example:** A manager selected *Exceeds expectations*, but the committee wants to understand the supporting evidence. Open the reviewee in People view, read the written answers and other packet context, then comment or propose a new rating.

## Grid view

Use **Grid** to compare the calibration group across two dimensions. Axes can come from current manager-review questions, past-cycle questions, connected stats, or supplemental data. A traditional 9-box uses three options on each axis; a five-option rating scale creates a 25-box grid.

Grid view is best for:

* Comparing two ratings, such as performance and potential
* Comparing one rating with a [stat](/features/calibrations/stats)
* Adding past review or supplemental context to a comparison
* Seeing clusters and outliers
* Reviewing how the distribution changes during calibration
* Running a live, screen-shared calibration

Choose a horizontal and vertical axis, swap their orientation when helpful, and switch between the initial and current views to compare original and proposed answers.

Facilitators can move a reviewee along an editable current-question axis. Past-cycle questions, stats, and supplemental data are read-only, so a reviewee stays fixed along those axes. Committee members have a view-only grid.

<Note>
  Grid appears when at least two eligible current-question, stat, or supplemental-data axes are available. After it appears, you can also select eligible past-cycle questions as read-only axes. If the Grid tab is unavailable, use People or Table instead.
</Note>

## Table view

Use **Table** for a compact, sortable list of reviewees. Add supported current or past review questions, stats, and supplemental data as columns to compare more information without opening every packet.

Table view is best for:

* Scanning a large calibration roster
* Sorting by manager or supported answer columns
* Filtering by manager, employee attributes, or review lock state
* Comparing several review answers, stats, and supplemental fields at once
* Commenting or changing supported answers inline

Use the column picker to keep the table focused on the information your committee needs. Click a reviewee when you need the full packet and discussion.

**Example:** Before a session, filter Table to one department or manager, then add *Overall performance*, a past-cycle rating, and *Quota attainment* as columns to prepare the review order.

## Time live reviews with the stopwatch

Use the shared stopwatch to set a time limit for each review during a live calibration. Every participant sees the same countdown and can control it.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start the stopwatch">
    Open the calibration's **Actions** menu, select **Start stopwatch**, and choose a duration from 30 seconds to 20 minutes.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Review the packet">
    The countdown appears in the calibration header for everyone. Use it as a pacing guide while the committee reviews the evidence and reaches a decision.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add time or cancel">
    Click the countdown to add 1, 2, 5, or 10 minutes, or cancel the stopwatch. When time expires, Windmill shows **Time's up** and plays a short chime.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Starting a new duration restarts the shared stopwatch. The timer does not lock the packet or force the committee to move on.

## Insights view

Use **Insights** to understand the calibration's overall effect. It summarizes the session and compares rating distributions before and after proposed changes.

Insights includes high-level measures such as:

* Number of reviewees
* Number of ratings changed
* Average rating shift
* Number of comments and contributors
* Before-and-after distributions for each rating question

Insights makes rating shifts easy to spot. Use the before-and-after distributions to identify decisions the committee may want to revisit before submission.

Use the filters in Insights to examine a meaningful group, such as one department, level, manager, or location.

You can also add a visual target to column charts and graphs. See [target distributions in Insights](/features/performance-reviews/insights#add-a-target-distribution) for the supported presets.

## Search and filter the roster

Grid and Table support search and filters so the committee can focus on a relevant comparison group. For example, filter to one level, department, manager, location, or lock state before reviewing a distribution.

Keep the comparison meaningful. Comparing people in unrelated roles can create a misleading impression even when the grid or table is technically correct.

## Review Discussion and History

The side panel keeps collaboration available from every view:

* **Discussion** groups proposed answer changes and comment threads so participants can follow unresolved decisions.
* **History** records calibration activity, including roster, settings, comment, and rating-change events.

Use **History** to understand what changed during the session. Reviewees cannot see this activity.

## FAQs

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Which view should I use for a live calibration?">
    Start with Grid for the overall comparison, then open individual packets in People when the committee needs evidence. Use the shared stopwatch to pace each review and Insights near the end to review the session's overall effect.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can committee members drag people in the grid?">
    No. Committee members can view the grid and comment, but only facilitators can propose answer changes.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Why can't I drag someone in both directions?">
    Past-cycle questions, stats, and supplemental-data axes are read-only. If one axis is contextual and the other is an editable current question, the reviewee can move only along the editable axis. The initial view is also read-only.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Does Insights change any ratings?">
    No. Insights summarizes what changed and how distributions moved. Only a facilitator can propose rating changes, and those changes do not update manager reviews until the calibration is submitted.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Does the stopwatch limit what participants can do?">
    No. It is a shared pacing tool only. Participants can keep reviewing, commenting, or discussing after time expires.
